Objects of play

Controllers
The videogame controller is an object that both triggers a sense of childhood nostalgia and one that I’ve continually found comfort in. Due to its inherent association with the immersive escapism of playing videogames, one cannot separate the experience from the object. Through the simple click of a button, an individual can be transported to a fully realized, digitally fabricated realm. Because of this, the tactile sensation of pressing buttons on an ergonomically designed handheld form, triggers a conditioned pleasure response within the mind.
To support this object’s contemporary function, the use of sterling silver as its primary material of fabrication was necessary due to the material’s inherent value, cultural history, and most importantly, its beauty. To complement the deep black of the oxidized silver and high polish of its accents, the inlay of colored acrylic in the buttons both accentuates the silver and pays homage to the original videogame controllers the work is based on.

Playground
This work was initially conceived through my research into play theory, focusing on the process of play and its relation to my studio practice. But once the pandemic took hold, I began to reexamine the significance of play as we seclude ourselves in quarantine. As children we would see the playground as a safe place to play and interact with other kids, but in light of the current circumstances, such a place has been deemed a health hazard. I wanted to create a small series that was both enjoyable to make and one that captured the visual aesthetic of the playground. The finished wearable objects serve as a reminder that although we are separated from one another, we still have the ability to play and have fun.
