When confronted with thorns in nature it is our basic instinct to keep our distance. The warning of harm is clear and present in their threatening appearance. But in our interactions with others, these signs are never so obvious. When a relationship with someone becomes abusive, it is only after the damage has been dealt that we are able to recognize the early warning signs of their ill intent.
The creation of these thorns came from such a relationship. Distracted by my desires, I looked past the red flags and remained in an unhealthy relationship. I was in denial. It was only after the relationship had ended that I came to understand how their presence in my life brought nothing but pain.
The process of forging this work was a very calming and therapeutic exercise. Each blow of the hammer, each taper of a thorn, was a negative thought taken form. It was this manifestation of my emotions that had allowed for me to work through the aftermath and grow from the experience.
